Press Release - Looking for a Dynamic Leader

North Salem CSD Seeks New Principal for PQ Elementary

The North Salem Central School District has begun recruitment of a new principal for Pequenakonck Elementary School, whose current principal will be retiring at the end of the school year.

The district is advertising in the New York Times and Education Week for a dynamic educational leader who places a premium on critical and creative thinking. PQ is a school of approximately 575 students, and is currently led by Roberta Reiner, who has worked in the district in this capacity since 1998 and is retiring at the end of the school year.

“Leadership transitions are always incredibly important,” said Dr. Kenneth Freeston, Superintendent of Schools. “But never as much as they are today, when our school principals are at the forefront of managing change on a scale that has likely never been experienced in the public schools of New York.”

In its advertisements, the district notes that it is seeking ‘an expert educator and leader who places a premium on critical and creative thinking, along with a willingness to embrace and exercise excellent teacher evaluation processes in the advancement of our professionalism.’ Screenings for prospective candidates are expected to begin shortly, and the selected candidate will begin the position on August 1st.

In advance of the interviews with candidates, the Superintendent will hold focus groups with staff, parents, and faculty members to hear about the personal and professional attributes desired in the new principal.

“Beginning with the next school year, all school principals in the state will, for the first time, be responsible for a much more expansive evaluation of teaching staff,” said Dr. Freeston. “That has to be expertly managed, along with the substantial and ongoing changes in student assessments. But we won’t lose sight of the fact that our next leader at PQ must also meet the conventional expectations of our community, as measured by warmth, creativity, critical thinking, and a devotion to the development of each North Salem child.”

A detailed list of qualifications for the position can be found at OLAS

https://www.pnwboces.org/teacherapplicationssl/

#NSAV0050526-1012. Application deadline is June 1, 2012.

“This is the end of one era, and the beginning of a new one,” said Dr. Freeston. “We congratulate Roberta on the conclusion of her career, and look forward to welcoming a new member of the family to our district.”

Joint Statement from the NS BOE and the NSTA

North Salem BOE and Teachers Approve New Contract
Agreement Provides 0% Salary Increase This Year, and 0% Step Increase Next Year in Response to Challenging Economic Conditions
A new contract between the North Salem Teachers Association and the North Salem Board of Education was adopted by the Board at its meeting on Wednesday, November 30th – one that will position the district to respond more nimbly to the challenges of the new tax cap.
The agreement, which runs through June 30, 2013, calls for a salary freeze in the current school year (0% increase), and a step freeze (0% increase). Increased health insurance premium contributions for teachers of 1% in the current year and the next year are also part of the agreement, along with a 1% increase in base salary for the 2012-2013 school year and other adjustments that carry only a nominal impact to the district.
“The agreement represents a collaboration in the best interest of our tax payers and the students of the district” said Board of Education President Katherine Daniels and NSTA President Neil Broderick in a joint statement. It is responsive to the challenging economic conditions faced by tax payers, and offers a realistic and fair contract resolution.

The agreement does not impact the current year’s budget appropriations (meaning it will have no additional impact to tax payers) and in 2012-1013, the agreement results in an impact to the budget that will be less than the proportionate share of the states tax cap, giving the district more flexibility to craft the budget, while providing greater relief to tax payers.

On behalf of the North Salem Board of Education and School Superintendent, we would like to thank the North Salem Teachers Association for their willingness to work collaboratively to meet the needs of the North Salem school district in the tax cap era. The agreement represents collaboration between the district and the NSTA. We are grateful for their recognition of these difficult economic times which resulted in a successful completion of these groundbreaking negotiations.

Cullin's finish in a time of 18:08 represented a sixth place position for Section One athletes. Cullin's performance helped his teammates secure a Section One Class C Championship.
Science Lessons at Pequenakonck

Dr. Mike Hibbard, Assistant Superintendent for Instruction and Human Resources, guides Kindergarten students at Pequenakonck Elementary School in a hands-on science lesson on sharks. The students closely observe the external parts of a spiny dogfish shark to learn how the structure of these parts helps the shark live in its ocean environment.

Senior O.P.T.I.O.N.S. Rescheduled: A note from Dr. Cyganovich

Please accept my apology for any inconvenience our cancellation of the O.P.T.I.O.N.S. presentations on June 9th may have caused you. While we did not lose power at North Salem High School, many of our evaluators were finding the surrounding roads impassible and we were concerned about the ability of all to arrive here safely. Without their participation the quality of this experience for our senior students would be greatly diminished. Add to that our concern for young drivers, parents and community members traveling in potentially hazardous conditions and I hope you can understand the reason for our cancellation.

We are however rescheduling the entire event for Thursday, June 16 and are hopeful that you will be able to join us. The presentations will begin at 7pm and should conclude at approximately 8:30 pm. A reception for all participants will immediately follow the close of the program. Junior students are excused from attending on June 16th.

I look forward to sharing a wonderful experience with you and the members of the Class of 2010 on Thursday, June 16 beginning at 7 pm.

North Salem Memorial Day Parade

North Salem School District was represented with pride and respect at the traditional North Salem Memorial Day Parade on Monday, May 30th, as our community paid tribute to our fallen war heroes, the Women who flew planes in World War II, and those men and women who served or are serving in the military.
At 10:00 a.m. Monday morning, just as the sun appeared from behind the storm clouds, our High School Band, under the direction of Mr. Stephen Austin, played Gallant Entry, with great force, as they marched from Oakridge Road to the Westchester Exceptional Children's School. Service songs played by the Band along the parade route included: Anchors Aweigh, Caissons, Marine Hymn, and Air Force Song -- alternating with Percussion Marching Cadences. The Star Spangled Banner was played with perfection by our Band Members at the Wreath Ceremony and all was profoundly quiet during Mr. Stephen Austin's moving tribute of Taps.
Many North Salem students (K-12 and former graduates) participated in the parade and memorial service as members of our Community's public service, recreational, and scouting organizations.

North Salem Central School District - A Validated Best Practice District

The North Salem Central School District has been approved as a validated best practice district through the Supporting Successful Strategies to Achieve Improved Results for Students with Disabilities (S3TAIR) Project. North Salem has been validated as having best practice in the area of Special Education with a focus on co-teaching.

In October 2010, North Salem was awarded S3 TAIR Mentor School status and as such has received a $10,000. 00 grant to support mentoring a school designated as being in need of intervention. In this way, the practice we have worked to develop and sustain at North Salem Central School District will provide valuable support to a school experiencing challenges in meeting the needs of all students. The grant funds are being used to provide professional development in our own district to further hone our skills.

NORTH SALEM SNOW DAY MAKE UP PLAN

Important Announcement
February 3, 2011 --

North Salem Central School District
Snow Day Make Up Plan --

As we all know, this has been an extraordinary winter. To date we have used eight snow days. After a close review of State Education Regulations and consultation with Board of Education legal counsel, we have determined that we have room in our adopted 2010-2011 school calendar to absorb these days without yet taking days from April vacation.

The Plan
March 25th, previously designated as a Professional Development Day, will now be a student school day. The Professional Development Day has been moved to June 28th.

Additional snow days after today will be made up during April vacation, starting with Monday April 18th through Thursday April 21st. Should more than four additional days be needed, we will add them to the end of the year, beginning June 27th.

Thank you for your patience and understanding.

Kenneth R. Freeston

Beth Savarese, a PQ teacher, and eleven other teachers from the North Salem Central School District (NSCSD) were joined by thirty-three teachers from other school districts in the Tri-State Consortium to share and learn strategies to improve student performance. The other districts present were Brewster, Scarsdale, Briarcliff Manor, Mamaroneck, Croton-Harmon, Mount Pleasant, Pelham, and Ridgefield.

The North Salem Central School District is hosting such a visit in March of 2012 and our Mission will be the focus. This Mission and strategies to accomplish it can be found at: http://www.northsalemschools.org/district/mission_and_beliefsstrategies

The site visit from Tri-State will also serve as the Middle States Accreditation visit to the North Salem High School.

Welcome!

The North Salem Middle/High School welcomes six teachers who are replacing teachers who retired, resigned, or are on maternity leave. They are from left to right, Gaetano Vitiello, English; Jennifer Ottati, Special Education; Jessica Wasserman, World Language; Nicole Iarossi, Health; Jenna Goldberg, English; Alison Vara, Social Studies.

Teachers new to North Salem come to school two days before the school year begins for veteran teachers. Professional development and orientation for them includes the North Salem curricula, assessments, teacher supervision / evaluation processes, and other school expectations and procedures. Here, Dr. Pat Cyganovich and Dr. George Bovino are leading these teachers through these materials.

Technology is an important part of good teaching and management. Here the teachers are learning about the systems including those for attendance, student academic performance, and communicating with students and their parents.

Each teacher new to North Salem has a mentor with whom to collaborate. Here Jessica Wasserman, a World Language teacher works with her mentor, Rose Arnold, on the specific details and strategies to engage her students in her Spanish curriculum.

There are no teachers new to North Salem at Pequenakonck this year.

PQ Students Turn Positive Behavior Into $1,000 Gift

Students at North Salem’s Pequenakonck Elementary School rose to a challenge they were given in September, turning good behavior into good deeds. By earning 48,000 tickets for good behavior through the year, they secured a $1,000 gift to the charitable organization Friends of Karen, donated by local business Raymond Opticians.
The effort is part of the school’s behavioral expectations program, Tigers CARE (Cooperate, Act responsibly, Respect each other, and Expect honesty), which this year was expanded to include the concept of philanthropy: Tigers CARE – We Share. “The theme includes the idea of giving to others, rather than just receiving personal acknowledgements for positive behavior,” says school psychologist Dennis Tendler.

Friends of Karen is a North Salem-based organization that helps families of critically ill children in the tri-state area pay for medical expenses, transportation to treatments, and assistance with household expenses, among other necessities.

Judith Factor, Executive Director of Friends of Karen, thanked the children for their efforts and for their gestures, such as making Valentines cards for Friends of Karen children. “You don’t know how happy your cards made them,” she said. “Thank you for caring and for sharing, and thank you from all the moms and dads who are so happy to know their kids have friends like you.”

In support of the fifth grade study of sustainability, the Westchester County Veggie Van visited Pequenakonck Elementary School recently to illustrate exactly what the students had been learning about. The Veggie Van is retrofitted to be fueled entirely by vegetable oil, which produces only 20 percent of the pollutants of a normal diesel engine. It has seating inside so students can watch DVDs on global warming and pollution and find out about what alternative fuels can do for them and the environment.

Project WET Soaks Students in Hydration Issues

June 9 was a damp day at North Salem Middle School/High School – but that wasn’t solely due to the weather. The school hosted Project WET, a global nonprofit program dedicated to educating communities about water: the way it connects societies, all of which depend on finite water resources; the importance of sustainable water management for social and economic stability; and the critical need for individuals to take responsibility for water resource stewardship.

The entire middle school participated in the day-long event, sponsored by Nestlé Waters, with students working their way through a series of five stations that illustrated various aspects of water use and water management.

These included Springing to Life, an activity that required students to understand and create a spring; Super Sleuths, a station that illustrated water-borne diseases; and Incredible Journey, in which students built a bracelet of beads that represented how water molecules move through living and nonliving things – from cloud to glacier to rain to plant and everything in between. One station required competing teams of students to fill a trash can with water by passing a small bucket along a line of students. “It illustrates how inefficient hand carrying water is,” explained one student, “and how hard,” she added.

“It was a great day,” said Assistant Principal George Bovino, who was on the event’s planning committee together with high school juniors Brandon Valentin and Billy Pearson and science teachers Melissa Valenti and Teresa Dzubak. More than 40 high school students, mostly from environmental clubs and the AP Environmental Science class, volunteered for the day.

Judging from a reflection sheet each student completed at the end of the day, “There was a great deal of individual learning,” said Dr. Bovino. “You could see a heightened awareness of the importance of water conservation and what an individual can do to make a difference.” Dr. Bovino anticipates that environmental clubs will take on water issues when they resume activities in the fall.

Unveiling of Students’ Favorite Novel Attracts a Crowd

About 50 fifth graders packed the Pequenakonck Elementary School library after school recently to find out which novel had won the students’ vote as best book and would receive the library’s coveted Tall Tree Award.

“Sometimes grown-ups treat reading like vegetables … It’s good for you,” said PQ librarian Noel MacCarry at the unveiling ceremony. “So what we’re celebrating here today is that you guys love books!”

Every two years, students at Pequenakonck Elementary read a selection of books outside of class and vote for their favorite, which receives the Tall Tree Award.

At the ceremony, students read excerpts from the three finalists, City of Ember by Jeanne DuPrau, Clementine by Sara Pennypacker, and The Lightning Thief by Rick Riordan. A trivia quiz tested how carefully students had read them, and finally, heralded by members of the band, a five-foot version of the winning book was unveiled and greeted with huge cheers: The Lightning Thief.

The Tall Tree Awards, created to encourage reading for pleasure, are a barometer of reader preferences for this age group across the country. Past winners have included The Series of Unfortunate Events #1: The Bad Beginning, by Lemony Snicket, Eragon by Christopher Paolini, and J.K. Rowling’s Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone.

The FDA has announced a voluntary recall by Freshway Foods of Sidney, Ohio of packages containing chopped romaine lettuce because of a potential health risk due to possible e. coli contamination.

Whitsons, the district’s food service provider, does not purchase lettuce from Freshway and has not received any of the recalled romaine lettuce. The company has also notified it customers that as an additional safeguard, they have confirmed with their produce suppliers that they do not carry this lettuce. In addition, all vendors approved for use by Whitsons must have in place a comprehensive recall policy that would include immediately notifying the company if any of our specified products were involved in a recall.
