Dear PQ Families:

Curriculum Night Information: Be sure to see the attached invitations for the Curriculum Nights! We hope all parents will plan on hearing about new things happening at PQ prior to meeting with teachers.
Picture Day: This Friday, September 14th, is Picture Day! No need for parents to come to school but be sure and send your children to school with their best smiles!

PQ's Kids Take your Parent to School Day: On September 17th and 18th, PQ will hold their "Kids Take Your Parent to School Day" in conjunction with NYS Dad's Day. This event celebrates parents or other significant adults as active partners in their children's education all throughout their school age years. Each child may bring one parent/special guest to this event. Parent/Special Guest will have breakfast with their children, walk their children to class, meet their child's teacher and see their child's classroom. If you are able to stay, special guests will hear a brief presentation on student health and wellness.

We continue to have amazing participation so we have once again planned a two day event. On Monday, September 17th, parents/special guests whose last name begins with the letters A-M are invited from 7:50 a.m. to 9 a.m. On Tuesday, September 18th, parents/special guests whose last name begins with the letters N-Z are invited from 7:50 a.m. to 9 a.m. Please see the attached flyer.

See the center of the North Salem Website home page for our weekly stories about our Mission to engage students to continually learn, question, define and solve problems through critical and creative thinking.

Summer Reading:
Please return any summer reading logs to your child's teacher by Thursday, September 13th. Students who took part in the summer reading program will receive a certificate and be entered into a grade level drawing to receive a stuffed Bad Kitty. The drawing will take place on Friday, September 14th.

Reminder for K-2 Students:
Please remember to place a name tag on kindergarten, first and second grade students during the first two weeks of school. It is most helpful when approaching a lost child to call them by their name and know their teacher and bus number. Thank you for the help.
North Salem Youth Lacrosse is holding a used equipment drive on Saturday, September 15th from 9 - 12 at the middle school cafeteria. They are looking for any used equipment for girls and boys and are targeting the K - 6th age group. Donations can also be dropped off in the PQ lobby.

Special THANK YOU to Hardscrabble Supply for generously donating the gravel for the ONE CUB/ONE YOU garden located by the flagpole in front of PQ! Your kindness has enabled us to construct a buddy reading area/mini outdoor classroom which can be enjoyed by all at our school!

Community News

On September 11th in 2001, our lives and the world we knew changed forever.  What started out as a beautiful, autumn day, turned out to be one of the darkest days in American history.  Brave men and women gave their lives that day for us and for our country.  Many still live with the memories of that day.  Let us take some time to gather together to remember.

A ceremony in remembrance, hosted by The Croton Falls Fire District, will take place at The North Salem Fire Station, 301 Titicus Road, North Salem, New York, on Tuesday, September 11th, 2018 at 6:30 PM.  We hope you can join us on this day of remembrance.

Pequenakonck Elementary School

Dear PQ Families:

Many thanks to all who have reached out to offer assistance as the work continues at PQ. Dr. Freeston will continue to update you regarding the status of the building. I know his next update is on Thursday. While I am unsure as to what day we will have access to the building, we will be doing everything we can to get classrooms ready for students for the start of the school year. Below are a few more reminders as we approach the start of school:

Important School Opening Information: We have attached an important Back to School letter with important information about school opening. Be sure to read this letter carefully!

Curriculum Night Information: Be sure to see the attached invitations for the K-1 and 2-3 Curriculum Nights! We hope all parents will plan on hearing about new things happening at PQ prior to meeting with teachers.

Dismissal Procedures for 18-19 School Year:
It is imperative for students to arrive at school with notes about their after school transportation needs. In order that children do not miss instructional time or worry about what they are doing after school, PLEASE send your child into school WITH a note stating what they are doing after school. Just a reminder that children are not allowed to switch buses for play dates or birthday parties.

Parent Pick-Up: Parent pick up will be in the gym at the end of each day beginning at 2:55 pm. Parents should enter the gym directly from the door in the parking lot. All children going to Parent Pick-Up MUST have a note indicating who will be picking up the child.

A PERMANENT PICKUP note will be honored when the parent/guardian has provided a written note to create this arrangement. Please indicate exactly what days the child will be picked up on a permanent basis and who the adult(s) is who will be picking up. Children will receive a color-coded tag for their backpacks as to which day(s) they are permanent pick-ups. Thus, a parent may arrange for their child to be picked-up for all 5 school days, or any combination of days, provided this has been indicated in advance. Please see the link below and send it to the office on the first day of school.

Transportation:
If you have a question about transportation please call Joe Senatore at 914-669-5854. Please remember that during the first week of school, buses are often late as new routes and routines are learned on each bus.

After School Enrichment (ASE): This program is organized by the PTO to provide fun and educational activities after school in a safe environment. Most activities take place at PQ and run for one hour after dismissal. A few activities (including horse riding and fencing) are offered off-site. Look out for more information in upcoming Tuesday Newsdays, and come see us at our table at the Open House on Wednesday, September 5th, from 3pm to 5pm.

PTO Meeting and Kindergarten/New Family Social:
Our first PTO meeting will also be Thursday, Sept. 6th beginning at 9:00 am in the Multi-Purpose Room. This is a great way to get involved and meet new people! All are welcome to attend!
The PTO would like to welcome all Kindergarten and NEW families at our PTO Social on Friday, September 14th at 5:00 pm!

Mission Monday!
See the center of the North Salem Website home page for our weekly stories about our Mission to engage students to continually learn, question, define and solve problems through critical and creative thinking.

IMPORTANT Notes from the School Nurse for all NEW students, Kindergarten, Grades 1, 3, 5 students: Just a reminder that all kindergarten and new students need to have updated immunization records submitted by the first day of school. Failure to submit the necessary records could result in the inability of your child to attend school.

Physicals are needed for all new students, and those in Kindergarten, first, third and fifth grades. Any physical dated from September 6, 2017 until present is acceptable for this school year. If your child has not had a physical after this date please make an appointment as soon as possible. The Health Certificate/ Health Appraisal form can be found on the school web site.

Although not required, a Dental Health Certificate is advised for all students that require a physical this year. All forms are available on the school web site by clicking on district then forms.
Summer Reading: The theme of this year’s PQ Summer Reading Program is ‘1000 minutes of Summer Reading’. You can access the summer reading program information from the PQ Media Centers website.
Reminder for K-2 Students:
Please remember to place a name tag on kindergarten, first and second grade students during the first two weeks of school. It is most helpful when approaching a lost child to call them by their name and know their teacher and bus number. Thank you for the help.
