Pupil Personnel Services - Description of Services
An alphabetical listing with a brief description of examples of these services are listed below:
- Contracted services - The North Salem Central School District contracts with various support services (i.e. assistive technology, behavior intervention) in order to provide support to students so that they may achieve academic success in the classroom.
- Coordinate with outside agencies - The Pupil Personnel Services Department acts as a liaison for families in order to facilitate services for families within the community in an effort to strengthen the home/school connection.
- Committee on Preschool Special Education (CPSE) – Programs and services for preschool students ages 3-5 who require special education and/or services.
- Committee on Special Education (CSE) – Programs and services for students ages 5-21 who require special education and/or services.
- English as a New Language (ENL) - The ENL program is for English Language Learners focusing on meeting state standards and elevating language skills.
- Grant writing – Refers to a proposal or an application to a potential funder to receive funding for a specific program or project. The Pupil Personnel Services Department coordinates the IDEA and ESSA Consolidated Application grants for the North Salem Central School District.
- Health Services – Services that improve the general physical and mental well-being of a student.
- OT - Occupational Therapy - Occupational therapy is a skilled health, rehabilitation and educational service that helps people across the lifespan participate in the things they want and need to do through the therapeutic use of everyday activities (occupations). The Pupil Personnel Services Department coordinates occupational therapy services for students requiring this service to access their education.
- Out-of-district placements – Educational placement for students who are in need of intensive, therapeutic or medically based services.
- Psychology – Our team of psychologists across the North Salem Central School District strive to help students succeed socially, emotionally and academically.
- PT – Physical Therapy – Physical Therapy is a branch of rehabilitative health that uses specifically designed exercises and equipment to help students improve their physical abilities in the educational setting. The Pupil Personnel Services Department coordinates physical therapy services for students requiring this service to access their education.
- Registration – Refers to the process of enrolling students in our school district and establishing residency and age documentation.
- Residency – In order to attend school in the North Salem Central School District, you must be a resident of the District.
- RTI - Response To Intervention – Refers to a method of academic intervention designed to provide early, systematic assistance to children who are having difficulty learning.
- Section 504 - Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act requires school districts to provide qualified students with a disability who is in the school district's jurisdiction, regardless of the nature or severity of the disability with a "free appropriate public education" (FAPE). Under Section 504, FAPE consists of the provision of regular or special education and related services designed to meet the student's individual educational needs as adequately as the needs of non-disabled students are met.
- Special Education – Refers to the education for students with disabilities as specified by the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act.
- Speech Therapy – Speech therapy services in North Salem Central School District assist students who have speech and communication disorders.
- Vocational Services -- Are offered to students with mental or physical disabilities. These services are designed to enable students to attain skills, resources, attitudes, and expectations as they transition out of High School.
- Title IX, VI, VII –
Title IX - of the Educational Amendments of 1972 prohibits sex discrimination in schools receiving federal funds, whether it is in academics or athletics.
Title VI - each Federal agency is required to ensure that no person is excluded from participation in, denied the benefit of, or subjected to discrimination under any program or activity receiving Federal financial assistance on the basis of race, color, national origin, age, sex, disability, or religion.
Title VII - is a provision of the Civil Rights Act of 1964 that prohibits discrimination in virtually every employment circumstance on the basis of race, color, religion, gender, pregnancy or national origin. In general, Title VII applies to employers with 15 or more employees.
