Frequently Asked Questions about
The North Salem Foundation for Learning
What is the North Salem Foundation for Learning?
The North Salem Foundation for Learning, established in 1996, is a tax-exempt, not-for-profit, volunteer-driven Foundation. The Foundation was the vision of Mr. Martin Lichter, a North Salem resident who was looking to give students a winning edge in a competitive global marketplace. He realized the need for an alternative source of revenue that could offer unique opportunities for learning.
What is the Mission of the North Salem Foundation for Learning?
NSFL engages in various fundraising efforts to support our students and teachers. At the beginning of every academic year, we send out an appeal letter to all NSCSD families for support. NSFL also hosts entertaining fundraising events throughout the year such a dinners, golf tournaments, and raffles in an effort to bring the community together for awareness and fun. Please visit our website at www.northsalemschools.org/foundationforlearning for more information on funding and a Calendar of Events. Join us for fun and supporting the next generation of global citizens!
Why does North Salem School District need a Foundation?
An educational foundation is a proven method for a community to challenge both educators and students to even greater initiative, creativity and excellence. While we are fortunate compared to many other school districts in the nation, the NSCSD budget still leaves room for need and enhanced educatiaonal opportunities. Our scholarships to seniors are more crucial than ever in light of severe increases in cost of tuition. The best way to maintain excellence during challenging economic times and diminished state aid is to establish a public schools foundation.
Where does the money go?
Funds go towards two major programs: aid to support projects and programs for students that are not covered by the school budget and scholarships to seniors in recognition of academic achievement and support of post-graduation education. Examples include iPads for special education students, student-designed life science kits for sustainable agricultural projects, and robotics for STEM programming.
How does the Foundation award grants?
Teachers and students are invited to submit proposal applications for grants to support projects and programs for the School District. The Foundation’s Board of Directors evaluates the applications for approval. To date we have provided over $200,000 in grants and scholarships. The Board of Directors takes a “legacy view” in evaluating proposals, looking for projects and programs that have a lasting impact and/or benefit as many students as possible.
How can I participate?
You can support the Foundation in many ways. In addition to Foundation Board Members, there are volunteer opportunities to assist us with our special events. We welcome anyone who would like to donate time, energy, money, or talent to help us meet our goals in providing next level educational opportunities and advantages to our students. Donations may be made in the form of check to North Salem Foundation for Learning and can be mailed to P.O. Box 39, North Salem, NY 10560.
