PTO NEWS

NEW DATE*** Special Presentation: Supporting Your Child in Managing Stress and Anxiety  Join us in the MS Cafeteria on Tuesday, March 26th at 7 pm for a discussion by Dr. Don Merriman, PQ School Psychologist, and Dr. Anthony Puliafico, Director of the Columbia University Clinic for Anxiety and Related Disorders—Westchester.  This presentation will provide parents with strategies for managing stress and anxiety in their children. The presenters will review the ways anxiety manifests in childhood and adolescence and will discuss how to distinguish normal stress from an anxiety disorder. Strategies for managing stress at home and responding when children exhibit high levels of anxiety will be introduced. There will also be an overview of treatment options for children and adolescents with anxiety disorders. A Q&A period will follow the presentation.
**MS/HS STUDENTS ARE WELCOME TO ATTEND**

PTO Scholarships Opening to PTO Members February 15th  Two scholarships of $500 each will be awarded by the PTO to students graduating from NSHS in 2019 who are going on to college or technical school during the 2019-20 school year.  New this year: students can choose to submit either a written essay of up to 500 words or a video or audio submission of up to 5 minutes in length. 

Scholarship applications will be available beginning February 15th on the PTO web site Resources page: https://nspto.weebly.com/resources--flyers.html and in the Guidance office from Ms. Lash. The deadline to apply is April 1, 2019. Scholarships are open to families who are NS MS/HS PTO members in good standing.  Email mspto@northsalemschools.org with questions.

College Essay Workshop for NSHS Juniors Juniors are invited to register for a college essay writing workshop taking place Monday, April 8 from 7:00 to 8:30 pm in the MS Cafeteria.  Students will learn the role of the college essay in the application process, review different types of essays, and participate in brainstorming and writing exercises. The workshop will be led by Lena Roy, Head Instructor and Regional Manager at Writopia Lab in Bedford Hills, as well as North Salem parents Maryanne D’Amato, Doris Freedman, Ali Jackson-Jolley, and Lulu Pelosi, who bring their collective expertise in writing, editing, and college counseling to the workshop.

Students who participate in the workshop will have the option to receive essay feedback at a one-on-one meeting, to be scheduled in the late spring or summer.

The workshop and follow-up session are for STUDENTS ONLY, and space is limited to the first 24 juniors who register online at

Science Research Competition

One of our senior students, Julia Balch, is participating in the Science Research Competition.  The Westchester/Putnam Science and Engineering Fair is being held on Saturday, March 16.  They are in need of judges for this competition.  If anyone is interested, please see the attached information sheet.

Counseling Department
American Legion Boys State is a week-long program that immerses high school youth (currently completing their junior year) in citizenship and leadership training. They learn the practical aspects of government as it exists in New York State, and come to recognize that the individual is integral to the character and success of government. They also participate in physical fitness, teamwork and other activities, under the guidance of American Legion counselors and U.S. Marines.

Boys State will be held from June 27 to July 2, 2019 at SUNY Morrisville State College in Morrisville, NY.  For specific information about the camp experience, speak to Ben Leicht, last years attendee.  Interested candidates will be interviewed by American Legion members.  Please contact Mr. Valenti if you are interested in this opportunity.

Attention parents of a student with an IEP or a 504 Plan.
Annual reviews and 504 meeting will begin the end of the month and continue through the spring. Programing for the 2019-2020 school year will be discussed at the annual reviews.

Attention 9th-11th grade parents

Scheduling for next year has begun. Counselors will be seeing your students now through the end of March to schedule electives for next year and discuss requirements for high school graduation. There is no impact on course availability due to the timing of our meetings. Teachers have begun to discuss placements with students as well.   The new course guide has been posted to the website (click here) Course requests will be posted on Parent Portal at the end of MP3.

Free Naviance CCLR Live by Kaplan Courses
New live streaming courses for March are now available for sign up on Naviance CCLR Live by Kaplan.   Be sure to check Naviance for other free courses available!

In addition, students and parents at Naviance schools and districts now have free access to on-demand Kaplan courses that develop the skills and mindset needed to succeed in college and beyond.

SOPHOMORES

The Pre-ACT will be administered to any interested Sophomore on March 15 from 7:30a to approximately 10:30a.  The High School Counselors have spoken to all Sophomores in their respective health classes and have handed out the attached Pre-ACT registration form.  If your child would like to take the Pre-Act, please register them through your My School Bucks account by March 1.

JUNIORS

Junior interviews, the process where students and their parents, meet individually with their school counselors to discuss post-secondary plans, generally takes place during the spring semester of junior year. Please call the Counseling Office (x2021) to make an appointment.  Please encourage your Junior to continue to work on their autobiographical summary.

It’s time to start thinking about signing up the SATs and/or ACTs.  Please visit the Counseling webpage for test dates and registration info. (link)

SENIORS

Please remember to let your counselors know if you have heard back from any colleges.

On March 8, Seniors will be participating in a mental health and wellness program through their OPTIONS Class.  Barbara Muhan, Psychologist, will be speaking about staying healthy as students transition out of high school and into their new lives.  Arms Acres staff will present about the dangers of substance abuse and Office Armstrong will be presenting about personal safety.

Are you thinking about applying to Westchester Community College?  If so, come to the on site application submission being held here on Tuesday, March 26.  More details will be posted as they become available!

ESSAY CONTEST

Tell Your Story - A cancer diagnosis can unleash a storm of emotions, questions, and unexpected discoveries, not just for the person with cancer, but for the whole family, and even their friends. Sharing your experience can be both good for you and helpful to someone else who
may be in a similar situation. Gilda’s Club Westchester is looking for honest, detailed, and heartfelt personal essays by young writers (grades 9-10) who can move the reader by sharing their experience with cancer.  See attached Flyer for details  Deadline is March 20, 2019.

Attention 8th grade parents

Transitioning to 9th grade is around the corner! This is a time to reflect and discuss the high school experience with your child. I will be with you along the way to support our students in making their course requests and educating them about the requirements for high school.  The end of March I will be pushing into the History classes to discuss high school requirements and demands. After that, there will be an elective rotation to expose students to the various electives that are available to them.

On April 11th there is an evening event (Transitioning to High School) for parents of 8th graders at 7:00.  There will be a PC Wizard sign up coming soon for 8th grade parent-student scheduling conferences. The conferences will occur after 9th grade scheduling is completed (April and May). Teachers discussed placements with students for next year and the course catalog is available on-line for viewing! Looking forward to working hand in hand with all of you.

8th grade Mental Health Lesson - Look, Listen and Link 2-26-19  

8th grade student's will participate in a mental health and wellness lesson focusing on signs and symptoms of stress. anxiety and depression. They will view the Look, Listen and Link movie and follow up with small group activities. Students will leave with tools and resources to help fellow students. The 714 741 texting hotline and the National Suicide Hotline, 1-800-273-TALK (8255) will be given.

7th and 8th Grade Students:

  • Thursday’s                   3:00-4:00 pm

Varsity and JV athletic teams will have exclusive use of the Fitness Center beginning at 4:00 pm, Monday through Friday.
